Add Boss Key, Minimize/Close to tray and memory auto cleaning to Firefox.

Posted Image

Posted Image

The bosskey Firefox extension is based on the Windows freeware program called Bosskey, by Robin Keir.

Posted Image

Our Bosskey extension can limit the memory usage of Firefox and clean it up automatically, as many people complain that Firefox is using a lot of memory. It can also replace the MinimizeToTray extension.

:flag-green: FEATURES
* Added "Boss Key" to firefox, keyboard shortcut can be customized.
* Minimize/Close to system tray.
* Memory auto cleaning, upper limit of memory using and cleaning timer can be customized.
* Set firefox window's transparency.

:bell: WHAT'S NEW
* Works with Firefox3. {if you disable compatibility checking or use Nightly Tester Tools}
* Minor bugs fixed.
* Included locales: en-US, de-DE, zh-CN, zh-TW.

:warn16: KNOWN ISSUES
1. Minimize To Tray (and its Enhancer)
Because bosskey can replace the MinimizeToTray extension, do not install MinimizeToTray (and its Enhancer) in the same profile as bosskey. This is to prevent them conflicting with one another.

2. Multiple Browsers, Browser Versions, and Profiles
If you have bosskey installed on more than one Mozilla-based browser (e.g., Firefox, Flock, Netscape 9), then each one needs to register a unique HIDE hotkey and a unique SHOW hotkey. If you have multiple profiles and multiple versions (e.g., Firefox 2 and Firefox 3) of these browsers, then you may run into conflicts where bosskey will fail to register one or more of the hotkeys, and if it does register them, the show/hide functions may not work properly in one or more builds or profiles.

:help16: HELP & SUPPORT
Sorry, but only Chinese support will be provided for a while at Mozine. There will be no English support at MozillaZine at this time. However, you can post to our AMI Discussion topic at AMI and someone will reply eventually.

Hi, welcome to AMI. Are you the author of this extension?

Here is the English version of the AMO page. It is in the Sandbox.
AMO

There is also a Windows freeware program called Bosskey, by Robin Keir.

Author: Robin Keir
Version: 2.00
Size: 7KB
Date: 2000-11-19
Compatibility: Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP (32-bit)
Platforms: [win] Windows only!
style_images/1/homepage.png Homepage

BossKey is a simple virtual desktop program. Create hot-keys to switch between the desktops and have one set of windows/applications on one and a different set of windows/applications on another and flip between them instantly with a single keypress. Up to 10 virtual desktops can be defined and windows can be designated always visible.

Version 2.00
BossKey can now have up to 10 virtual desktops, each with its own associated hotkey. It still has the ability to toggle between the current and last desktop with a separate hotkey.
Added the ability to specify any number of windows that should be excluded from hiding. You enter a partial text string and if that text is contained in the title bar of any window (case sensitive) it will not be hidden.
Fixed order of taskbar icons being reversed when switching desktops.

Disclaimer: This software was written by Robin Keir and is distributed as freeware.

You will have to temporarily allow the site in order to get the file. I scanned it with anti-virus and anti-spy programs and it appears to be clean and safe.

I'm one of the team.

Beside the function of bosskey, as you just descript, our Bosskey extension can also minimize/close Firefox to system tray. So it can replace the extension MinimizeToTray.

Our Bosskey extension can limit the memory using of Firefox and clean it up automatialy, as many people complain that Firefox using a lot of memory.

I think the two function above is even more useful then the function of bosskey.

It also works on Netscape 9. I just tested it in Firefox 2 and NS 9 simultaneously, and two instances of Bosskey were present in the system tray. So you can add NS 9 compatibility without making any changes to install.rdf. Haven't tried testing a modded version on Firefox 3 or Flock. Do we have your permission to mirror bumped/modded versions?

No prob.

As a matter of fact, we've tested this extension in Firefox 1.5 - 3.0 and all works fine. But haven't tested it on Netscape or Flock yet.

I have uploaded the file and will add it to your original post. The problem with uploading files will be reported in the technical issues forum (Sheppard's To Do List) so that he can look into the matter. Someone else is having trouble uploading files in posts and uploading a new avatar.

If your new version is compatible with Firefox 3 (as you claim in the previous post), then the maxVersion needs to be changed because the file currently reads as follows in the version I downloaded from your site.

Compatibility: [fx09] 2.0 - 2.0.0.*

That does not show Firefox 3 compatibility. You would need to change it to this.

Compatibility: [fx09] 2.0 - 3.0a9

Please be sure that the install.rdf file you have uploaded to your homepage/forum has this updated compatibility. In the meantime, I updated your first post and added screenshots and a compatibility note. I will try to post the bumped/modded version tonight or tomorrow.

Also, if you would like to add any additional information to our official listing, feel free to edit the first post or reply here and I can do it. New consecutive topics will be created for those listings based on the information provided here, and then this topic here will become the formal {Discussion} topic and will be moved to the Discussions area.

Suggestion: For better English, the option should read "Show tray icon only when needed"

Suggestion: You may want to start a support topic also at MozillaZine forums. Your homepage and the Mozine forum are in a different language (character-based), so I really can't run it through Google translator or read any of the support topics there to see if these questions and issues have been covered.

Question 1: Since this extension can replace MinimizeToTray, I take it that there would be a conflict if MinimizeToTray (and possibly also Minimize To Tray Enhancer) was also installed at the same time? Since they have similar functions, I assume so, and a warning was added to the first post as a "Known Issue" to prevent conflicts. Make sure the two known issues in that first post are written in a clear and simple manner. I hope people will understand what I mean. Also make sure that what I have stated is indeed correct. If not, please clarify. Thanks.

Question 2: Where does bosskey register the two hotkeys (show/hide)? Where does it store the data (e.g., Windows registry, firefox profile, etc.)? I need to know how to UNREGISTER those hotkeys when bosskey is uninstalled from the various profiles, browsers and versions of FX, NS and FL. I want to be able to double-check manually that they are indeed removed so that if another extension or application needs to use that same hotkey, that it will let it.

Yes, it indeed works on fx3 well, but we don't recommend nightly versions to general users, so we'll keep maxversion as it is presently. If you think it is necessary, you could change it for the downloads provided on addonsmirror.net.

Thanx, it'll be corrected immediately.

Sorry, but only the chinese tech support will be provided for a while.

It can't be clearer anymore.:)

The data was stored with two variables as follows in the fx profile.
extensions.bosskey.keyhide
extensions.bosskey.keyshow

And, the hotkey is registered by XPCOM of the extension automatically while fx starting, and unregistered while fx exited. So, don't worry about it when bosskey was uninstalled.

AMI has mirrored this extension.

With Flock 1.0 and Netscape 9, no modifications are needed. The original extension will install automatically. For Firefox 3, you would need to bump the maxVersion.
