Name: Cookie Monster
GUID: {45d8ff86-d909-11db-9705-005056c00008}
Author: Tony Schilling
Version: 1.0.0
Size: 50KB
Date: 2010-05-07
Compatibility: [fx09] 1.5 - 3.6.* [fl] 0.7.0 - 1.5 [ns] 9.0b1 - 9.0
Platforms: [win] [mac] [lin]
:home24: Homepage | :amo16: AMO | :ami16: Discussion

In a nutshell, Cookie Monster allows for easier managing of what sites a user allows to set cookies and what sites cannot. It works best for users who do NOT accept cookies by default, although this is not necessary. It helps with Cookie Management, especially when you reject cookies by default.

:flag-green: FEATURES

- Temporary Permission for sites to leave cookies (permission removed and cookies deleted for site with temporary permission upon restart of Firefox)

- Options to set general Firefox setting to block all cookies or to block 3rd Party Cookies

- Menu options to view cookies for current site or all sites

- A panel indicating the current status of cookies for the current site and domain appears while hovering over the cookie status indicating icon in the status bar

- Functionality to Override Global Cookie Permissions on a per-site basis (this functionality is for a known problem with the DOM property navigator.cookieEnabled). In essence, if choosing "Accept Cookies ...." or "Accept Session Cookies...." for a site does not seem to work, this functionality may help and it may help with those sites supposedly requiring 3rd party cookies).

Posted Image

:option16: OPTIONS
* Use 2nd Level Domains (this is also available from the popup menu)
* Delete Cookies When Changing Access to Deny (be careful with this because when selected, if the user changes a sites cookie acceptance rule to Reject Cookies through this extension, any current cookies already accepted from this site will be deleted)
* Block 3rd Party Cookies (for users who do not set the default cookie acceptance rule to Reject, clicking this will set the Firefox preference network.cookie.cookiebehavior to 1 (Enable cookies for the originating web site only)

:note16: General Notes for ALL users:

Please note whether you have the Cookie Monster Option 'Use Second Level Domain Names' checked, because this dictates if cookie permissions are monitored and changed for the full domain name or the base domain name (e.g. www.mozilla.org or mozilla.org).

Major Update:

Thank you for using Cookie Monster 1.0.0. It has been quite awhile since the last update and in this time I have received quite a few requests for new features and enhancements. While not able to add all of these requests for this update, I have added several of them:

- Updated code for Temporarily Allowed Cookies to address potential issue when several Firefox windows (not tabs) are open simultaneously (Thank you M. Harvey for reporting this)

- Added option to set whether affected web pages are automatically reloaded when cookie permissions change
- Added Cookie Monster menu to the context menu (i.e right-click)
- Added keyboard shortcut to display Cookie Monster menu (Ctrl-Shift-m)
- Added to the menu "Revoke All Temporarily Allow" functionality to revoke temporary permissions for all sites
- Added text to the Cookie Monster tooltip indicating whether or not the site has requested to set cookies (This does not indicate whether the cookies were accepted - only if the site requested to leave them)

- Added support for Third Party Cookie management:
* Added sub-menu containing any third-party cookies detected during loading of the page
* Within this menu
- Each third-party cookie request can be managed individually
- All listed third-party cookie requests for the site can be set to Temporarily Allow
- All listed third-party cookie requests for the site set as Temporarily Allow can be revoked
* Obviously, the third-party detection code is new and although I have performed some testing, I cannot guarantee it will detect every third-party cookie request, but I hope it detects most of them. Detecting third-party cookie requests is challenging enough, let alone in an asynchronous, multi-tab browser environment.

- Updated German localization by Alexander Krickl (Thank you)
- Updated French localization by Olivier Atton (Thank you)
- Added the Traditional Chinese localization by Cheng-Wei Chien (Thank you)

I have submitted an updated version, 0.75, to https://addons.mozilla.org, wherein the max version for Firefox is updated to 3.0b2.

FYI - This extension is now part of the Firefox public add-ons list:

http://addons.mozilla.org/addon/4703

I have 3 questions =

1) Can Cookie Monster 0.96.1 edit cookies of a site (like expiration date)?

2) When Cookie Monster 0.96.1 automaticlly removes cookies for temporary permisson,
does it do it on exiting of Firefox or on startup?

3) With Cookie Monster 0.96.1 (see question nr 2), is CookieCuller 1.3.1 obsolete?

Answers to your questions:

1) No, Cookie Monster 0.96.1 currently does not have the capability to edit cookies of a site.

2) When automatically removing cookies for temporary permission, CM 0.96.1 does this on exiting of Firefox, but if this action fails for some reason, there is provision to check for and delete any cookies marked as temporary upon startup.

3) As I am not familiar with the capabilities of CookieCuller 1.3.1, I cannot answer this question.

With CookieCuller 1.3.1, you can choose to protect certain cookies from CookieCuller 1.3.1 other function,
which is deleting unprotected coookies when you exit Firefox.

But if Cookie Monster deletes cookies with temporary permission,
then CookieCuller 1.3.1 is obsolete, because cookies with permanent permisson usually means you want to keep them.

I hope you get what I mean :tongue2:

This may be a possibility and I will certainly consider this for a future update.
Thanks for thanks for the feedback and thanks for using Cookie Monster.

Great work, Tony. I'm a contributor to and a long-time user of the CookieSafe and CS Lite extensions. Although he did a lot of great work on these two extensions, their developer, Ron Beckman, has not provided any active support for months. softwareblaze.com, their home page for documentation, downloads, and forum support is gone. Neither of my email addresses for Ron work anymore.

Imagine my surprise and pleasure at discovering Cookie Monster last week! I've replaced CookieSafe/CS Lite with Cookie Monster and am very pleased it. I just added reviews on AMO for CookieSafe and CS Lite suggesting Cookie Monster as a possibly suitable replacement.

Cookie Monster is perfect for me. I browse with "Accept cookies from sites and Keep until: I close Firefox". Cookie Monster makes it easy to tell whether a site has a non-default Allow permission and change the permission for sites where I want a persistent cookie, e.g. forums and banks. The default status bar icons are easily distinguishable. I like being able to view and set the permission for either the subdomain or base 2nd level domain name. I appreciate the convenient access to the Firefox Show Cookies and Show Cookies Exceptions dialogs. I use both Show Cookies for example.com and sometimes even Delete Cookies for example.com. Much easier than working my way through the Firefox Options.

Keep up the good work and thanks.

Alan,

Thank you so much for the comments and for choosing Cookie Monster as a replacement. One thing I really need to do is update the Cookie Monster documentation and perhaps find a project hosting site.

My email address is listed on the AMO Cookie Monster entry, so please feel free to email me with any comments or suggestions. Also, I have a list of beta test users, so if you would like to receive beta versions for testing, please let me know.

Thanks again.

Thanks for this extension! (I registered to write this). I've been a longtime user of CS and CS Lite (thanks to the author and other contributors, too). But it seems these extensions are not supported anymore. After 5 minutes of use it seems your extension is the perfect replacement. Please keep this extension simple and implement other features as a new extension. I say this, because I think this is a reason that the author of CS stopped the support. Maintaining all the features and meeting all the wishes of users can get out of hand easily.

And one question, because I just lost the text I wrote in another forum: can I prevent the page from reloading when I change the cookie permissions? In CS you actually had to activate this behaviour, which in my opinion is the better way. If I want to reload a page to set the cookies, I can do it myself.

No offense, but CS Lit was last updated in January, and is usable through the 3.6a (Minefields).

But sine you like this one, go for it.

I'd ask your question of the original developer over at AMO, though.

Lupin,

Thank you for using Cookie Monster and for the kind words. As far as the page reloading when changing cookie permissions, I actually prefer the automatic reload, but I can see where other users would prefer to perform the reload manually. Therefore, I will plan to add the ability to deactivate automatic page reload in Options in the next release.

Hello, there is a bug of the interface when opening Cookie Monster options dialog. The last checkbox option is cut off (see attached screenshot). Can this be fixed?

Thank you.

P.S.
I'm using Firefox 3.5.5 on Windows XP SP3.

So please find his address here: Cookie Monster :: Add-ons for Firefox and then email the author.

schlampe,

Did you ever email me about this?

This is a known problem, but it is a problem with Firefox when either using Windows 2000 or Windows XP with Appearance set to Windows Classic style. I have reported this problem as a bug:

https://bugzilla.moz...g.cgi?id=496353

Feel free to report your experience if you would like.

By the way, the last option is as follows:

Use Original Default Icon (the Monkey)

Even though partially visible in your rendering, the checkbox is clickable.
