It will:
autocorrect 'bad' words for 'good' words/html
... as in, automatically change 'cna' to 'can' and 'dont' to 'don't'
... it can also automatically change 'myaddr' to '<BR><b>Jim Jones</b><BR>123 Anystreet Rd.<BR>SomeTown. AZ 12345'

autocorrect THis to This
..double or triple caps to single cap

autoCap first letter of sentences
.. so, when you finish a 'sentence' ( with either . or ? or ! ) it will cap the next first letter *if* that letter is less than 4 spaces away )

you can also add/edit/delete autocorrect words/phrases in the extension's options dialog...

This extension comes with its own autocorrect list, but you can also download autocorrect.txt from our server.

A modded version of TB Auto Correct can be found here:

Modified by: Rod Whiteley
Size: 27KB
Date: 2009-02-12
Compatibility: [tb07] 1.0 - 3.0.*

Changes to install.rdf:
  • Increased Thunderbird maxVersion to 3.0.*
  • added some options to make sentence capitalization more aggressive
    • One option capitalizes the start of each paragraph, and another capitalizes sentences that begin after colons. They are both enabled by default

Because there are code changes, I took the liberty of naming this version 0.0.6.

TB 2.0.0.14

Any help would be appreciated.

I tried it again in 2.0.0.17 It failed one time, and worked the next time. Perhaps Stashbox is behaving badly. I added another link to the same file that might work better.

Hi just tried this great extension very useful. Two faults I have found (I think).

1. Tried on Windows (XP) worked fine but not on Ubuntu 8.10 going into 'Preferences' in add ons gives 'the auto correct file could not be loaded'.
2. The Auto capitalise does not work for the the first word that you write in an email or for the first word after a manual carriage return

But a really useful extension for rubbish typists like myself.

Thanks for this nice extension, it's very useful :)

I would like to reuse the list of corrections for auto-correcting mistakes in LaTeX documents, am I allowed to do that?

What's the license of this extension (I could not find any license file in the .xpi archive)? Am I allowed to redistribute my script including these auto-corrections? If yes, is there any header/license message that I should include?

Thanks for your answer!

I've tried the 0.0.5 version in TB2 and it seems to work very well. Excellent.

The only thing that's a pity is you can't "undo" any of the add-ons corrections. E.g. I normally don't want random CAPS in my text. But suppose I want to stress part of a word for once (say HAPpy), or tell someone about how my autocorrecion feature always magically changes "weer" into "were" I can't get the autocorrection to ignore this word.

One suggestion: it might be a good idea to warn users that if they already installed and used this, and they now install the newer version, their old list of autocorrect items will be overwritten wit your new one.

And if you like -- here is an even longer list, based on your own with ca. 500 new entries from another list.

I merged your last post about the new bump into the original post, Rod.

As soon as I can I'll get the bumped mod uploaded to the correct location so the post will be directly in line with all other posts here.

Does this not work with Unicode characters? I want things like +- --> ± and kohm --> , but they don't work when I add them to the list. Either nothing happens or the character changes to something else when I reload the list, etc.

k&Omega;
works, though.

I love this extension! Most days I'm a terrible typist and this saves me a lot of time.

I have a question/suggestion about accessing the TB Autocorrect's database preferences.

It seems the only way to add a substitution or edit the list is by opening Add-ons and clicking the module's options button. This can become a bit clumsy, especially at first as you find more new misspelled words.

Is there a way to access the list directly in a message window from a context menu? Perhaps a drop-down arrow next to the Autocorrect toolbar button?

Would it be possible to select a word, then right click it and choose something like "Add to Autocorrect?"

Best and thanks for a great product.

Hi all,

I'm glad that Rod Whiteley re-packaged this extension with updated Thunderbird versions. However, there were 2 things not quite right, one of them already in the original extension, which he couldn't have noticed, because Windows (grumble, grumble) doesn't differentiate between upper- and lowercase letters:

1 - The file AutoCorrect.txt, referenced from content/autocorrect/settings.xul in chrome/autocorrect.jar was stored as autoCorrect (lowercase A). This fixes the error "The autocorrect file could not be leaded, check the JabaScript Console for reason(s)" that linux users have been experiencing with this extension.

2 - The Version was incremented in the file-name, but not in install.rdf, causing the installed extension still to appear as 0.0.5.1 in the Add-Ons window. I have packaged my changes as 0.0.6.1.

Attached File  TB_Auto_Correct_0.0.6.1.xpi (26.71K)
Number of downloads: 272

Please update the top post to include this update.

Many thanks for updating this extension. I have used it for years, updating the max version number as appropriate. However, to use the version I had with TB 3 I had to disable the check for secure updates; your version removes this problem.

Many people appear to be searching for an updated version of this add-on - would it be possible for you to include it in the Mozilla add-ons repository? (I have just joined this site to express my gratitude for the update; please excuse me if suggesting that the add-on is posted on another site amounts to heresy!)
